Code Switching: The Cost of Being “Palatable”

What Is Code Switching?
Code switching is the act of adjusting how you speak, behave, present, or express yourself depending on the environment you’re in.
It can look like:
- Changing your tone, language, or cadence
- Monitoring facial expressions or body language
- Altering how you dress or style your hair
- Avoiding certain topics or opinions
- Being more “polished,” “neutral,” or “non-threatening”
At its core, code switching is about safety, acceptance, and access.
But it comes at a cost.
The Pop Culture Mirror
We’ve seen this play out in pop culture time and time again.
Think about Issa Rae in Insecure, navigating different versions of herself between work, friendships, and relationships—constantly shifting language and energy depending on the space.
Or Quinta Brunson’s character in Abbott Elementary, balancing authenticity with professionalism in a system that doesn’t always honor either.
Even characters like Olivia Pope in Scandal—brilliant, composed, and hyper-aware—reflect the pressure to be exceptional while remaining controlled and composed at all times.
These portrayals resonate because they’re real.
The Mental and Emotional Toll
Code switching requires constant awareness.
You’re not just present—you’re monitoring:
- How you sound
- How you’re being perceived
- Whether you’re “too much” or “not enough”
- Whether it’s safe to be fully yourself
Over time, this can lead to:
- Mental fatigue and burnout
- Increased anxiety in professional or social settings
- Disconnection from your authentic self
- Emotional exhaustion from constantly “performing”
It’s not just communication—it’s regulation, strategy, and protection.
The Pressure to Be “Palatable”
There is often an unspoken expectation to be:
- Approachable, but not too assertive
- Confident, but not intimidating
- Expressive, but not emotional
- Authentic, but still “professional”
That balancing act is exhausting.
And the line keeps moving.
When Authenticity Feels Risky
For many, the question isn’t “Why don’t you just be yourself?”
The question is: “What happens if I do?”
Will I be respected? Will I be heard? Will there be consequences?
Code switching often isn’t about preference—it’s about navigating environments that were not designed with you in mind.
Moving Toward Authentic Spaces
While code switching may still be necessary in certain environments, it’s important to begin identifying where you can exhale.
Where can you:
- Speak freely without overthinking
- Show up without editing yourself
- Express emotion without fear of judgment
- Feel seen without performing
Those spaces matter.
They are restorative.
They are necessary.
For Organizations and Leaders
The responsibility should not fall solely on individuals to adapt.
Organizations must examine:
- What is considered “professional”?
- Who defines acceptable communication styles?
- Are diverse expressions of identity truly welcomed—or just tolerated?
Creating inclusive environments means reducing the need for constant adaptation.
